On behalf of our Village residents, and along with our Board of Trustees, I am very excited to welcome you to our website!

Roslyn Estates is a one-of-a-kind Village, full of charm, character and history. We live in the midst of gorgeous trees, fabulous ponds, rolling hills, nature and walking trails, and a meandering and unpredictable layout … no other community compares! Incorporated in 1931, our beautiful, architecturally unique Village is home to just over 400 families as well as to a number of businesses that reside along the Village’s northerly boundary, Northern Boulevard. We were home to Christopher Morley for nearly four decades! Just a brief stroll to the Americana Shopping Center or to Christopher Morley Park, and a minute by car to the Long Island Expressway and the Northern State Parkway, Roslyn Estates is one of Long Island’s most conveniently located communities.

Part of the Roslyn School District, Roslyn Estates is a safe and welcoming community protected by the Nassau County Sixth police precinct and two fire departments (Roslyn Highlands and Roslyn Rescue). Our Village officials and staff work diligently to serve the ever-changing needs of our residents. We strive to communicate clearly and efficiently, in order to provide everyone with ongoing information and the opportunity to get involved. We value the input of all who wish to contribute to the success, growth and improvement of our cherished community.

Running Through Stop Signs is a Danger to Everyone

Our Village Office has recently received multiple phone calls about cars blatantly ignoring Stop signs and driving through them without stopping. Stop signs are a fundamental component of road safety infrastructure, serving as a clear and universally understood command for drivers to come to a complete halt before proceeding. Cars running through stop signs—whether due to distraction, impatience, or willful negligence—pose serious risks to pedestrians, cyclists, other drivers, and the overall safety of our Village.

Running a stop sign means failing to bring a vehicle to a complete stop at an intersection where such a stop is legally required. This behavior undermines the basic rules of the road and disrupts the predictable flow of traffic. Many drivers who commit this violation do so without malicious intent; they may be distracted by mobile devices, in a hurry, or assume that no one else is at the intersection. However, regardless of the motive, the consequences can be severe.

The most immediate danger posed by running a stop sign is the potential for a collision; or worse, an injury or fatality. Intersections governed by stop signs often have limited visibility, making it difficult to anticipate cross traffic or pedestrians. When drivers fail to stop, they increase the risk of accidents with cars, pedestrians and cyclists. In our Village with narrow roads and many curves we all are highly vulnerable in these situations, as we rely on the assumption that vehicles will obey stop signs.

Running a stop sign often stems from a driver’s failure to focus on the road and other factors. Taking the same route and overconfidence can also lead to complacency, causing drivers to roll through or completely ignoring the Village stop signs they encounter regularly. Another factor is the perceived low risk of enforcement, especially in our Village where police presence may vary at different times throughout the day.

Addressing this issue requires a combination of enforcement, education, and infrastructure improvement. Increased police monitoring at high-risk intersections can deter violations, while public awareness about this problem can reinforce the importance of stopping. Making intersections more visible, adding speed bumps near stop signs, may help to naturally slow traffic and help contribute to greater compliance, which our administration is fully committed to enhancing in the short term. In our Village where children are likely to be present, these measures are particularly crucial.

Running a stop sign in our Village is more than a minor traffic infraction—it is a dangerous behavior that puts lives at risk. While it may seem like a small act in the moment, its potential consequences are far-reaching and often irreversible. A collective effort by all of our residents is the first step, to making our Village roads safer.
