Mayor's Monthly Letter
From the Office of Hon. Paul Leone Peters, Mayor
September 5, 2024
Dear Neighbors,
I hope everyone enjoyed their last summer weekend and the great weather it brought to our beautiful village. Although the autumnal equinox is still two and half weeks hence, the Labor Day weekend marks the end of the traditional summer season and the beginning of a new school year. That means, of course, that our winding roads will again be filled with children on mornings, afternoons and weekends. Please be especially careful driving through Roslyn Estates during those times, and over the weekends, and be reminded to observe fully the STOP signs at intersections and on stopped school buses.
STORMY WEATHER We are already in the middle of hurricane season, but – so far – we have been spared any truly violent storms. However, we have endured a few intense squalls and high wind events, and we’d be foolish to think we are past the worst of it. Global warming is causing these storms to become more and more intense, and the combination of high winds and rain-soaked leaves and ground means that we must be alert to the threat of falling limbs and trees whenever we endure any severe storm – much less a hurricane. Please remember to have your trees safely pruned to help minimize such threats, and please be certain to alert us to any issues that could be a danger to yourself and/or your neighbors. Most importantly, please contact PSEG-LI immediately to report any downed or damaged power lines. I have attached to this newsletter a press release from PSEG-LI explaining how to prepare for and respond to such emergencies. Please review the information and be ready to cope with potential storms this season. And one more time, if you don’t already have one, please consider installing a generator to take you safely through the almost inevitable power outages. If you have any questions about generators, please feel free to call or e-mail Steve at Village Hall.
NEW KID IN TOWN As some of you may know, our exceptional Building Inspector, Joe Richardson, retired this past Friday after fifteen years of dedicated service to Roslyn Estates. As the longest-tenured member of the Village staff, Joe served under three mayoral administrations. Joe earned my continued respect for always keeping as his first priority the best interests of our Village as a whole, insuring code compliance at the same time that he worked with residents to try to get them acceptable outcomes when their wishes and Village regulations did not coincide. While we will miss Joe, I am pleased to introduce to you his successor, Stephen Rusnak. Steve brings to Roslyn Estates his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from New York Tech and nearly thirty years’ experience as Building Inspector for the villages of East Rockaway and Sands Point, as well as many years in the construction industry. Steve spent two weeks working with Joe to become familiar with our village and its code, and we welcome him to our dedicated and loyal staff. Steve will be on the same M-W-F schedule that Joe followed, so please plan any appointments accordingly.
STOP! IN THE NAME OF LOVE We are still optimistic that the proposed NYS legislation permitting local municipalities to enact camera-enforced STOP sign laws will be passed this term in the State legislature, helping us to ensure the safety of our residents from those many drivers who ignore STOP signs throughout Roslyn Estates – most of whom are merely cutting through to avoid a busy intersection. Until that happens, if you are waiting with or for your children at a school bus stop, please consider using your smart phone to record those drivers who ignore the STOP signs and endanger your children – as long as you can do so without diverting your attention from them. If we can document those intersections that are the most dangerous, we can make a more valid case with the Nassau County PD to have a patrol car at a particular location.
TAKE OUT THE PAPERS AND THE TRASH! (YAKETY YAK) Please be reminded that we pay Meadow Carting quite well for side and/or rear yard pickup of our waste, so please do NOT leave your thrice-weekly trash out front, at the end of your driveway. If you have arranged with Meadow for a special pickup of large items, and they have requested that you leave those items at the street, please put out those items no earlier than the night before the pickup. Leaving such waste at your driveway’s end for one or more days is not only an eyesore and objectionable to your neighbors, but also a code violation, and you will receive a violation notice for such offenses. Thanks, in advance, for your cooperation with this.
POISON IVY (OMG! A second Coasters reference!) I’ve noticed that many of our village’s magnificent trees are once again covered in ivy. Non-native English Ivy weakens and kills trees by preventing sunlight from reaching the tree's leaves, weighing down branches in wind or ice storms, and encasing the trunk so that the tree bark stays moist and, over time, begins to rot. Please remember that residents are responsible for maintaining not only their own property but also the Village right-of-way between their property and the street, so please take the time to remove or kill the ivy growing on all the trees in your domain. All you need to do is cut the ivy at the base of the tree, and the rest of it will eventually die, removing at least that threat to the safety and health of the tree – and your property.
Enjoy our beautiful village as the seasons change and bring the rainbow of fall colors, and please remember to drive safely, quickly report anything of concern to the Police, and be good to your neighbor.
Sincerely, Paul Leone Peters, Mayor (516) 220-8166 mayor@villageofroslynestates.com
